Construction
Clothing
Tamamo’s outfit was designed as a strapless dress with a short circle skirt and hanging panels underneath the skirt in the front and back. All patterns and appliques were self-drafted.
The upper conical portion of the sleeves were reinforced with thick interfacing so that they would stand on their own. The obi tails (or “wings) tuck into the back of the bodice and were reinforced with craft foam and wire to give them shape.
Ears & Tail
A harness for the upright tail was created using a wooden circle as the base and 9-gauge wire as the tail frame. Two straps were attached using screws. The fur tail cover was put on the wire frame and stuffed with Poly-Fil.
For the ears, fur triangles were cut out and shaved using an electric razor to shorten the fur. The fur triangles were sewn together and balls of white fur were sewn on the inside of each ear. Both ears were hot glued to a headband base.
Thoughts
This is the first cosplay I made where I felt that my skills were sufficient to accurately translate my vision of this costume into reality. I have been cosplaying since 2011, however I consider this to be the first time I felt satisfied with my abilities. I applied many new techniques for the first time while building Tamamo no Mae, including sewing fur and using heat transfer vinyl. I also began paying special attention to fit when drafting patterns, which was always a struggle in the past. This cosplay truly motivated me to expand my repertoire of skills and to pay attention to the details!
