Construction

Clothing

Toph’s outfit is self-drafted and primarily consists of a high-waisted skirt, blouse, chest “belt”, and thin scarf. The printed chiffon skirt is patterned as two pleated panels (front and back) sewn up the sides except for several inches towards the top. A folded green satin band was sewn across the top with ties on the sides of each band to close the skirt.

The chest “belt”, or hezi, is made of satin with hand-embroidered flowers in the center. Cream and green satin edges along with beaded trim were added. Eight ties were sewn in the back to close the hezi.

The blouse, made from crinkled chiffon, was drafted using a tutorial from Hanfu-Asks on Tumblr.

Wig & Accessories

The wig was styled using a Black (CL-078) Jeanie base wig from Arda Wigs with matching short wefts that were crimped and sewn to a jumbo hair donut to create the bun.

The hair accessories were purchased from couturnmore on Etsy and the fan was purchased from Amazon.

Thoughts

The design for Toph’s aristocrat dress from The Blind Bandit takes inspiration from modern and historical Chinese hanfu fashion. The costume is modeled after the qixiong ruqun style and consists of a blouse (ru), high-wasited skirt (qun), a decorative “belt” (hezi), and a long thin scarf (pibo). Researching and designing the historical elements of this costume was very fun! I learned a lot about traditional and modern Chinese hanfu and I’d love to incorporate the style into everyday wear!
